Support Richard Cordray for Governor of Ohio – Fall 2018

Ohio Sierra Club endorses Richard Cordray and Betty Sutton for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Ohio.

Over the last five years, Cordray served as the first-ever director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a position he was appointed to by President Obama. Under Cordray’s leadership, the CFPB brought actions against some of the nation’s largest financial institutions forcing them to pay nearly $12 billion to over 30 million Americans who were cheated or mistreated.

Before serving our country at the Consumer Bureau, Cordray defended Ohioans as Attorney General. He worked to hold Wall Street accountable by recovering more than $2 billion for Ohio’s public teachers and retirees who were victims of fraud and financial predators. Prior to serving as Attorney General, Cordray served as the Ohio Treasurer, where he protected taxpayer funds, managed the state’s bonded debt and investment accounts, expanded job growth by supporting small businesses with reduced-interest loans, and spearheaded financial literacy programs to empower Ohioans. Cordray also served as an Ohio State Representative and as Ohio’s first ever Solicitor General, where he represented the State of Ohio before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Ohio Supreme Court. He fought to protect Ohio’s hate crime laws and against the Ku Klux Klan’s efforts to expand in southern and central Ohio.

The youngest of six children, Betty Sutton worked her way through college at Kent State and – while still in law school – won the first race she entered: Barberton City Council. She then went on to serve as Vice President of the Summit County Council and in the Ohio House of Representatives.

In 2006, Betty successfully won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in the 13th Congressional District, where she served until 2012. Her election to Congress made Betty the first Democratic woman in Ohio to serve as a legislator at the local, county, state and federal levels.

In 2013, President Barack Obama appointed Betty to be the Administrator of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. As the executive in charge of leading the U.S. operations of this international waterway, Betty successfully worked to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the waterway to support jobs and growth in the area.
