Consumer Activism in the Fight for Responsible Palm Oil – Sept. 23 @ 7, Cleveland

The Power is in Your PalmMonday, September 23, 7 PM at the Cleveland Botanical Garden

Speakers:
– Jess Serrante, Rainforest Agribusiness National Organizer
– Melanie Berkowitz, Rainforest Agribusiness Assistant National Organizer

The Rainforest Action Network’s (RAN) Power is in Your Palm grassroots campaign is pressuring America’s 20 favorite snack food companies to eliminate Indonesian rainforest destruction and human rights abuses from their palm oil supply chains. RAN’s work to protect Indonesia’s remaining rainforests has involved creative activism targeting many stakeholders: palm oil plantation owners, palm oil global traders, and big palm oil purchasers (i.e. snack food companies like Smuckers and Hershey). In the past several years, RAN has used different tactics to target different sectors in the palm oil industry. RAN recently launched its new campaign on September 12 pressuring snack food companies—including Cleveland area’s Smucker’s Company—to eliminate rainforest destruction, orangutan extinction, and human rights and labor abuses from their supply chains. Cleveland is the fourth stop on RAN’s Power is in Your Palm Tour!

At the event, RAN will present on the history of its palm oil campaign, bring together Cleveland palm oil activists to discuss the global palm oil problem, and find ways for local supporters to continue targeting snack food companies going forward.

Free & open to the public, though parking at the Botanical Garden does have a cost.
