Oppose Undemocratic Voluntary Labeling of Genetically Manipulated Foods!

Despite the fact that over 90% of Americans want mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food, the House of Representatives foolishly passed a voluntary labeling bill. Huge agribusiness is currently working behind the scenes to get a companion bill introduced.

What is genetically engineered food? Genetic engineering/manipulation involves the artificial combining together of genes from completely different species, making new life forms. Genes from animals, insects, fish, bacteria and viruses are being spliced into our food supply. People with certain religious beliefs or concerns about eating animals have the right to know if the food they are eating contains animal genes.

Peer-reviewed independent studies performed at universities throughout the world suggest that consumption of genetically manipulated food can damage major organs, cause immune suppression and/or cross the placental barrier.

Call Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman (202-224-3121) to let them know you vehemently oppose voluntary labeling. Sierra Club supports S. 511, the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, which would put in place mandatory, nationwide labeling of genetically engineered foods.
